Scarlett Johansson Reveals Why She Panicked After Her First Date With Colin Jost
Five years after Scarlett Johansson and Colin Jost tied the knot, the Black Widow star reflected on their very first date, admitting she “panicked.”
After their first date, Colin Jost thought Scarlett Johansson just wasn’t that into him.
But the Black Widow actress admitted that she didn’t let her true feelings show during her first meet up with the Saturday Night Live comedian, noting she was completely out of her element.
“Nobody had ever asked me out before,” Scarlett reflected during the Dec. 1 episode of Today. “I was a serial monogamist and I never got the sort of traditional like, ‘Hey would you like to have dinner sometime?’”
But when the Pop Culture Jeopardy! host took a shot, Scarlett who shares daughter Rose, 11, with ex Romain Dauriac as well as son Cosmo, 4, with Colin made it seem like it was a total airball.
“He actually asked me out on a date,” Scarlett recalled. “We went to an Italian restaurant in the East Village. It was a lovely date. We had dinner. Afterward, he was like, ‘I’m meeting friends, let’s go grab a drink,’ and I hadn’t dated basically ever so I was just like, ‘I have to go now.’ I need to leave.''
Indeed, the 41-year-old who went on to tie the knot with Colin in 2020 called it a night after only about 90 minutes.
“I got home to relieve my babysitter and she was like, ‘Why are you home?’ and I was like, ‘I don’t know!’ I just felt so flustered,” she explained, noting she had dropped the wrong impression to her now-husband. “Later he was like, ‘I totally thought that was it. You were acting so weird.’ I panicked. I don’t know.”
For Colin’s part, he noted his very first impression of Scarlett back in 2006 on the set of SNL made her seem “beautiful, smart, sweet and intimidatingly sophisticated.”
"She has just turned 20 and I was 23, but in terms of status and maturing she was here [holds hand above head] and I was here [holds hand one inch off ground],” Colin, now 43, wrote in his 2020 memoir, A Very Punchable Face. “She claims that she remembers thinking I was 'cute,' but I know what I looked like and that's not the word I would have used. ('Shaggy' would have been generous. 'Slovenly,' more accurate).”
Nevertheless, the pair obviously hit it off. As Colin noted of their now nearly 10-year romance, "I've met someone I love and who I feel more comfortable with than I ever have before.”
